about

Deep Cabaret's music is built on a beguiling bed of riffs and drones; hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes, bass clarinet, cello and the ever-remarkable harmonics of Tuvan over-toning. Desert blues improv and noir-drenched drone songs. A romantic and coruscatingly edgy mix of roots, jazz and leftfield pop.

Lyrics for the songs are literally 'found' in stuff Steve comes across when reading, novels, poetry, science, history and eco-psychology texts. They are adapted from contemporary writers like Jonathan Safran Foer, Mary Oliver and Marilynne Robinson and icons like William Blake, Carl Jung and Wassily Kandinsky. Sometimes they're used neat, sometimes mashed together with extracts from pieces about the neuroscience of attachment, the Queen's Guide to the Sands and even from the back of a bottle of bleach!

Matchless is produced by Justin Adams, the UKs Ry Cooder. a great guitarist in his own right, currently Robert Plant's go to man, he's gathered a deep expertise in North and West African music and introduced desert blues pioneers Tinariwen to the West.

"Justin completely gets where we're coming from which is why we were so delighted when he agreed to produce us. And then so grateful to ACE to be able to go down to WOMAD's Real World studios and work alongside a world-class engineer like Tim Oliver."

The Inspiration
"Our music is very desert blues influenced but with a distinctly Morecambe Bay based take" says bandleader Steve Lewis says "When the tide is out Morecambe Bay is a flat, spacious desert. Looking into it, even your breathe becomes more expansive."

So come the drones - sustained, expanding, beguiling tones. And the desert blues riffs - the groove driven music of Saharan West Africa. Deep drones and rolling riffs.

Steve Lewis, lead vocal, guitar, baritone guitar and guitarlele combines his past lives as an improvising vocalist and percussionist making rhythmic loops, interspersed with characterful instrumental melodies and experimental textures. Paul Sherwood brings a deep knowledge of European folk traditions, on hurdy-gurdy and bagpipes. Jazz musician Matt Robinson plays clarinets / Baritone sax. Maja Bugge, cellist, contemporary classical composer and improviser from Norway, now resident in Lancaster, takes the role of bass player as well as lyrical introductions and extended techniques. Jay Stilwell is grounded in the study of Tuvan music and extends that world switching between a rich bass bed and plaintive harmonics. All this is coloured and propelled by Ben McCabe on drums with beats borrowed from desert blues, yoiks and new orleans.

about

Deep Cabaret Lancaster, UK

Deep Cabaret is the culmination of bandleader Steve Lewis' life's work: to make a band that curates all the musics that fascinate him - jazz, improv, African, folk and leftfield pop. To use that music to set fragments of text taken from novels, journalism, spiritual and other texts that have interesting things to say about being human. ... more
